A power bank discovered in a passenger’s luggage has forced a UK-bound EasyJet flight to divert to Rome. Flight EZY2618, travelling from Hurghada, Egypt, to London Luton, landed in Rome on Tuesday evening as a precautionary measure.

The airline said its captain chose to reroute the aircraft in accordance with safety regulations after a passenger informed cabin crew mid-flight that a portable charger had been placed in the aircraft hold.

Airlines have increasingly tightened restrictions on power banks due to concerns over lithium-ion batteries overheating and potentially causing fires.

Passengers are commonly required to carry such devices in their hand luggage.

The aircraft landed safely at Rome Fiumicino Airport, and the flight was rescheduled for the following day. According to EasyJet’s policy, power banks are only permitted in cabin baggage. However, they must not be used during the flight or connected to other devices for charging.
