Move follows industry consultations and aims to stabilise aviation operations amid fuel cost pressures while repayment talks continue.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has temporarily halted it’s planned “no pay, no service” sanctions against airlines indebted to the agency over statutory charges.
Director General of Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo, said the NCAA’s decision followed consultations with aviation stakeholders and concerns surrounding the increasing cost of Jet A1 fuel.
In a statement signed by Captain Najomo, the Authority, however, emphasised that the suspension does not mean airlines have been exempted from paying their debts, noting that all outstanding remittances remain valid and must still be settled by the operators.
According to the NCAA, President Bola Tinubu had earlier approved a 30 per cent reduction in the debts owed by airlines as part of measures aimed at easing financial pressure on domestic carriers and supporting stability within the aviation industry.
The regulatory body also defended the five per cent Ticket and Cargo Sales Charge, explaining that the funds are collected by airlines on behalf of the aviation sector and are expected to be remitted to support regulatory functions and other essential aviation services.
