Meta has announced a comprehensive suite of security measures aimed at protecting football fans and players from online scams, bullying, and harassment in the build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
With millions of fans expected to use Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to connect during the tournament, the tech giant warned that "bad actors" are already attempting to exploit the global event.
Starting this week, Meta will introduce real-time interventions on Facebook.
Users searching for World Cup tickets or visiting related Facebook Groups will encounter pop-up notifications advising them on how to spot fraudulent offers and directing them to official, verifiable ticket sources.
The warnings will also feature direct links to Meta's reporting tools, allowing users to instantly flag suspicious accounts or content.
The initiative comes as experts warn of a predictable surge in tournament-related fraud, including fake ticket sales, fraudulent accommodation listings, and visa or immigration scams targeting travelling supporters.
Meta revealed it has already begun dismantling coordinated scam networks by sharing data with industry peers and law enforcement through the Global Signal Exchange (GSE) and its own Fraud Intelligence Reciprocal Exchange (FIRE).
